On Monday, Moi University together with Park University (USA) and Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) held the first-ever ‘Career Fair’ at Moi University Main Campus premises.
The event saw 1,500 high school graduates across three counties attend.
Among those who attended the event was Placement and Career Development Director Dr John Oluoch who represented KUCPS where he gave a detailed analysis of current trends and opportunities that are available to students.
He also gave advice to the students on the importance of taking courses that are in demand and ensuring that they utilize their passion ad interest when they choose courses they intend to do.
Ms Taylor Billings and Dr Boakye represented Park University and revealed details about the University’s curriculum and available opportunities for International Students.
They also revealed various programmes available and how it would be beneficial for students who are seeking to study abroad.
Other who attended the event were Moi University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Sanga Kosgey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Research, Extension, and Student Affairs) Prof. Isaac N. Kimengi, Deans, Directors, Student Governing Council, staff and students.
KEF Equips Beneficiaries with Post-Secondary Life Skills
The Kenya Education Fund (KEF) held a workshop where they mentored their beneficiaries who had just completed their secondary school education through their scholarship programmes.
The students went through the Class of 2022 CREW (Career Readiness, Reproductive Health and Entrepreneurship Workshop) at the Contemplative Retreat Center in Karen.
The purpose of the workshop is to give insight to the beneficiaries regarding the transition to higher institutions of learning and adulthood.
They were also awarded a one-year scholarship to help them join colleges and universities.
Since its inception, the transition rate of the beneficiaries into institutions of higher learning is at 98%.
The attendees went through sessions facilitated by professionals including KEF alumni Hilda Chebet who is now an editorial assistant. She taught them leadership skills, saying that communication is an important aspect of building the foundation of success.
Lead Coach and KEF programmes Manager Prisca Mutemi, a certified design thinking coach took them through design thinking. The students covered food security, inclusivity, clean water and sustainable energy.
Civics was taken by Gerald Walterfang, Founder and Director at WDS Africa, a KEF partner.
Dr Gift Mtukwa, lecturer at African Nazarene University and KEF partner took the attendees through work ethics and negotiation skills. He reiterated that the country needs more ethical leaders who should be mentored starting from a young age.
Sessions on drug abuse, CV writing and interviewing skills were among the other life skills taught at the event.
As of this year, KEF shall be conducting workshops for students outside the KEF scholarships (non-beneficiaries) who wish to be mentored.
