MMUST Calls In EACC in Bid to Eliminate Corruption in the Institution
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has partnered with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and has embarked on a programme to curb corruption as part of the Commission’s mandate on review of systems and accountability.
The institution has faced a number of graft scandals in recent years, especially before Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Solomon Shibairo came into power.
While launching the programme at the university with the Vice-Chancellor, the EACC Director of Services Vincent Okong’o said that they had visited other institutions of higher learning for the same purpose.
He revealed that procurement, construction of school projects, enhancing technology, health services and disaster management required accountability and transparency.
According to Okong’o, they were developing a report on findings that they had collected by that time and will eventually present them soon.
According to the MMUST Council Chair Dr Musanaji Rutiva, EACC will check on the progress of systems, documents and policies to ensure processes are transparent and that its implementers do it with integrity.
Prof Shibairo said that the Human Resource Department of the institution had streamlined the procurement process, project management, promotions of staff and hiring and firing of workers to ensure that the institution had a competent workforce.
He added that the institution was financially stable and that all employers had been paid on time in addition to trying their best to meet the demands of the workers.
The MMUST VC expressed optimism that the institution would provide more employment opportunities to members from the surrounding community for harmonious coexistence and development as part of its social responsibility.
