KNUT Implores Teachers Who Can Manage Financially To Enroll For TPD

KNUT has urged teachers who are able to manage financially to enrol for the TPD to do so in order to improve their skills.

Speaking while at the KNUT headquarters in Nairobi in a press briefing, the union’s Secretary General Collins Oyuu revealed that the programme needs to be supported by all parties.

“The Commission is seeking funds for the programme. Meanwhile, all teachers who are capable of financing themselves to pursue the programme should enrol for it since it is a regulatory requirement enshrined in the constitution,” said Oyuu.

In addition, Oyuu said that the programme is crucial because it improves the teachers’ pedagogical and management skills as well as learning outcomes and should therefore be supported by both parties to ensure that it succeeds.

He also revealed that the TPD is important for teachers and that they agreed with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to organize sensitization workshops for all teachers in order to make them understand TPD and its implementation.

“TPD was structured and rolled out in 2013 through the required statutory laws. It was then an integral part of 2015 reviewed Code of Regulations for Teachers (CoRT) and finally became a discussant in the 2016-2021 CBA,” said Mr Oyuu.

Oyuu revealed that his union found out that the Commission had not invested in sensitizing teachers on the need, involvement and benefits of the TPD.

“In its roll-out, there was some resistance from stakeholders and the public mostly because proper sensitization was not done,” added Oyuu.

Oyuu said that his KNUT’s leadership should work together with other stakeholders to ensure a budgetary allocation to fund the training for all teachers was done since the teachers are currently financially strained because they have not received any salary increments since the signing of the new 2021-2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The TPD was rolled out by TSC on September 22, 2021, at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA).
