Ministry to Release Sh. 19 billion to schools before January 4

The Ministry of Education is set to disburse Sh. 19 billion to all institutions of basic education (primary and secondary schools) before schools reopen this coming Monday.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha warned school administrators against mismanaging the funds as he said that they would face dire consequences if they mismanage the funds.

According to the Ministry of Education, Secondary schools shall receive Sh. 14 billion while primary schools shall receive Sh. 4 billion.

The CS to the Ministry of Education spoke yesterday while checking on how prepared schools are ahead of reopening.

“Use the money for what it is meant for. Spend the funds with due diligence,” he said.

The CS said that those who will be caught mismanaging the funds will face the law.

Prof George Magoha also confirmed that suppliers had delivered some 500,000 desks in a number of sub-counties in Central, Nairobi, Rift Valley, and Nyanza.

Some institutions, according to Magoha have received all the desks required.

“The remaining is a challenge that must be dealt with by making sure all schools receive desks between now and the day of reopening,” said Magoha.

The CS also urged relevant agencies to work for more hours and deliver the desks. He assured those making the desks that there will not be any delays regarding payment.

“The reason we are slowing down in payment is that the maximum our gallant artisans can be paid via their mobile phones in one tranche is Sh. 150,000,” said the CS adding that the artisans should withdraw the first tranche so as to receive the second. Withdrawing the first tranche allows withdrawal for the second tranche.

CS Magoha also implored all artisans to submit all the details to facilitate payment.

Magoha revealed that the Ministry had experienced issues regarding the delivery of desks to Wajir, Murangá, and Turkana since the artisans had not completed the desks.

The CS also asked for a multi-sectoral approach ahead of the reopening of schools.

“The only problem we have now is social distancing and our children must come to school,” said CS Magoha urging parents to buy reusable masks for their children.

Three million out of 16 million learners in both secondary and primary schools will get masks from the government. According to the CS, the government has delivered one million masks while the government will source two million before schools reopen next week.

Regarding national examinations, the CS revealed that preparations are ongoing for Standard Eight and Form Four candidates.

“If there is evidence that a school cannot reopen, more so private schools, the government shall absorb the children during the time of sitting for examinations. The examination council will give directions on where the child will sit the examination in one of the government institutions,” said Magoha.

He told headteachers not to send learners home for school fees, but instead, arrange with parents to pay the school fees.
