Student Beaten Leading to Closure of School In Mombasa County
The Ministry of Education has closed the Gremon Education Center located in Mombasa County following injuries caused to a student after being beaten for eating too many Chapatis.
Coast’s Regional Director of Education, Adan Hussein, said on Tuesday to the media on the 1st of February that the decision was arrived at after it was discovered that even the registration of the institution had not been done the right way.
Besides, the Regional Director said that the school will remain closed until the school meets the requirements for registration as issued by the Ministry of Education.
“The report concludes that the primary wing is closed as it is not registered. The secondary wing should be closed too because they do not meet the safety and hygiene standards as directed by the Ministry of Education. The school will remain closed until the Ministry’s requirements have been fulfilled,” said Adan Husein.
It was also reported that a Class 7 student suffered kidney damage following the punishment.
The learner’s mother revealed that there were attempts by the school to hide the incident. She also revealed that the school principal, when approached, informed her that the issue was a non-issue.
“My son cannot even stand. How can this be a non-issue?” said the child’s mother.
The parent, Agnes, claimed that the principal had ordered other students to beat up the child after he had taken five instead of one chapatti during dinner.
Agnes added that the injuries inflicted on her son were life-changing and that she does not know when she could recover. She also revealed that her son required extensive medical attention with the doctor revealing injuries inflicted on both his kidney and genitalia.
