136,833 Unemployed Primary School Teachers Apply For 1,000 Advertised Slots with 219,311 Applying for 4,000 Secondary Slots

The Teachers Service Commission has received 136,833 applications for the 1,000 newly advertised primary school teacher vacancies.

Secondary schools have received the most applicants in the recently advertised slots with a total of 219,311 teachers applying for the 4,000 advertised vacancies.

Following applications, shortlisted candidates will be recruited at the county level before being assigned to their respective schools.

According to TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia, the merit lists generated during the exercise will be used for future recruitment within the financial year.

The Commission also advertised 8,230 job openings that shall replace teachers who have exited service due to natural attrition.

This comes amid complaints from a section of unemployed teachers who have implored the Commission to recruit teachers based on the year of graduation.

The teachers are calling on the Commission to recruit teachers based on the year of graduation from their respective Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs).

The teachers were protesting against the Commission’s scoresheet where teachers who graduated with their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) in 2015 or earlier were grouped together,

According to the score sheet released in July, teachers who graduated in 2015 or earlier were assigned the same marks/grades.

ASAL Areas Receive Few Applications

Arod and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) have received fewer applications in the recently advertised teaching vacancies.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has used affirmative action to advertise for positions in Mandera, Garissa and Wajir Counties which are severely understaffed.

Teachers from other regions have not preferred deployment in recent years due to insecurity where people who do not originate from the area have been frequently targetted in attacks.

The ASAL areas have very low numbers of people who meet the requirements for teacher training.

According to the Ministry of Education’s statistics, there were 116, 96 and 118 TSC-employed personnel in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa schools respectively in 2021.
