Here Are the ‘Exorbitant’ Demands Kakamega School Has Placed On Parents Following School Fire Incident

Following a fire incident that caused the destruction of property, Kakamega School has revealed the conditions for resumption of learning..

The reopening of the institution will be staggered with Form 4 students being the first to report on 15th November, Form 1 students will follow suit on 21st November, Form 3 students will return two days later on the 23rd of November 2021 and then Form 3 students will resume learning on the 25th of November 2021. This is quite intriguing with the reopening dates possibly set according to the relative involvement of every form in the students’ unrest incident.

The Ministry of Education set the half-term break on the 19th of November and then all students will resume learning the following week. The half-term adjustment involves both primary and secondary schools.

Besides, setting the dates for resumption of learning in the institution, the school’s administration has also demanded that every learner be accompanied by either a parent or a guardian and should arrive in the school premises by 8:00 am in the morning on the set dates without failure.

In the notice, it was also revealed that according to a report from the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works. The Bill of Quantities done in following with the assessment by the public works officer was at Sh. 12,185,540.00.

The cost of the installation of the damaged CCTV installation has been estimated to be Sh. 695,420.00. The Cost of double-decker beds was also included and was calculated to be Sh. 4,194,400.00. Besides every student paying a set figure of Sh. 9,823.00, school fees arrears up to the second term 2021 will also have to be cleared in full and all bank slips availed on the opening day of each form.

In the letter, the school pledged to donate a mattress, two blankets and two bedsheets to students whose items were lost in the fire.

RE: RESUMPTION OF LEARNING AFTER THE FIRE INCIDENT ON 6TH NOVEMBER, 2021 AT KAKAMEGA SCHOOL

Following the Board of Management Meeting held on 10th November 2021 at school, the following was resolved:

i) That the school resumes in phases as follows:

a) Form 4 – 15th November 2021

b) Form 1 – 21st November 2021

c) Form 2 – 23rd November 2021

d) Form 3 – 25th November 2021

Each student, accompanied by the parent/guardian should be in school by 8:00 am on the given dates without fail.

ii) As per the Ministry of Transport Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works report on the burnt dormitory, the Bill of Quantities done as per assessment by the public works officer stands at Kshs. 12,185,540.00.

iii) The cost of the CCTV installation in the building is estimated at Kshs. 695,420.00.

iv) The cost of 280 Double-decker beds is Kshs. 4,194,400.00.

v) Each student is expected to pay Kshs. 9823.00 as costs for damages calculated as follows:

The total cost for the items of the 560 students damaged by the fire is estimated at Kshs. 4,536,000.00. The total cost for the damaged building is Kshs. 12,185,540.00. The cost of the double-decker beds is 4,194,400.00. The grand total of the damages is Kshs. 21,611,360.00. Divided by the total number of students which is 2200.

This amount must be paid by all students on the day they report.

vi) All outstanding fees and arrears up to the second term, 2021 must be cleared in full. Avail of all the bank slips on opening day.

  • The school will donate a mattress, two blankets and two blankets and two bed sheets to the students whose items were burnt in the fire.
