Girls’ School in Baringo Closed Indefinitely Following Students Protests
Pemwai Girls High School students have been sent home for an indefinite period after protests. The students protested following a weird incident involving the death of one of the students.
The student who died was a girl in form two and had lost her life on Sunday, February 13, 2022. Her schoolmates took to the roads and walked for around five kilometres at night to a nearby centre to protest their fellow learner’s death.
According to the learners, their mate died due to negligence.
Due to the protests, the school administration resolved to close the school for an indefinite period as they work on the solution to the issue.
Some parents together with learners blamed the school’s administration for neglecting the deceased even after she had clearly shown signs that she was unwell.
They felt that the school had not been responding as required concerning their complaints.
The learners revealed that the now deceased Faith Karonei had been nose bleeding throughout the night after calls to have her taken given medical attention was not accepted by those concerned. The loss of one of the schoolmates only added fuel to their concerns leading to them resorting to demonstrating.
“A student can be sick even for the whole month and no step will be taken to address their sickness. We are mourning our sister,” said one of the learners.
Similar Incident elsewhere
A form three student from Homabay County who had been attending school at Obera Boys Secondary School in Ndhiwa lost his life while playing football with his colleagues.
The student had allegedly collapsed after hitting the ball with his head on the evening of Sunday, December 5 while within the school compound.
The student’s death caused tension in the school as other learners destroyed school property leading to the police being called in to calm down the situation.
