English Classes Introduced In KMTC in Bid to Make Kenyan Nurses Internationally Competitive

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has now introduced its nurses to compulsory training on English in a bid to make them qualify for the recently signed bilateral agreement between Kenya and the United Kingdom (UK).

According to the chairperson of the Nursing Board of Kenya Eunice Ndirangu, the new programme will improve their English skills to enable them to be competitive at the international level.

Ndirangu was positive regarding the training on the program stating that the nurses will do well among their peers in the UK.

“This will make our nurses be competitive at the international level. We are urging them to fly our flag high as they go abroad and keep improving on their professionalism,” said Ndirangu.

On his part, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said that the training would enable medical practitioners to have essential skills that will make Kenya a competent workforce that is recognized internationally.

Besides, Kagwe also clarified yesterday that the nurses will travel to the UK as expatriates and not as refugees.

“I am pleased to officiate this historic event. It is our first time as the government in doing this to prepare our workers to be capable of working internationally. We are not saying that there are no nurses working in the UK from Kenya but we are making the process formal. Our nurses will travel as expatriates, not as refugees,” said Health CS Kagwe.

According to Kagwe, only 10 out of 300 health workers were selected last year for the United Kingdom jobs.

Kenya had negotiated an agreement with the UK to allow Kenyan nurses and health workers who are not employed to work in the UK.

Kagwe also expressed his concern that the issue was an unfortunate one as only a few of those who applied for the jobs qualified.

Due to this CS Kagwe challenged the health workers to work harder to ensure they pass the employment standards that have been set for jobs abroad. He also promised that the government will continue negotiating for more Kenyan health workers to work in Europe as well as the Middle East.

The Health workers had to work in the UK’s National Health Service before being allowed to return to Kenya.
