Egerton University Launches Parents Portal to Track Students’ Academic Performance and Discipline
Egerton University has launched a parents and guardians portal with student information to help in tracking their children’s performance.
In addition, the portal will also provide frequent updates concerning events held in the schools.
The news was broken to all staff, students and parents through a notice whereby the institution revealed that the web-based system will provide parents and guardians with a channel for direct communication and support to their children while in school.
Egerton University Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kibwage said that parents will be able to log in to the portal and see the progress of their children academically.
“Parents will be able to monitor how their children are doing and where there are issues and give us feedback,” said Kibwage.
According to Kibwage, the portal will ensure an all-round interaction and ensure students’ progress as required in their academic journey.
The Egerton University administration wants parents to be aware of their learner’s academic performance and in their view, parents will now ‘walk the academic journey with their children.
According to the institution, the main purpose of creating the students’ portal was to make information readily available to parents and guardians to keep parents connected to the academic development and their son’s and daughters’ campus life in the institution.
The portal contains crucial student information, announcements, updated news about the university and important university calendar dates including student registration details, admission numbers and programmes.
Parents will also be able to access the academic progress of their children, transitions, academic results, tracking fees payment, and student discipline and also has a feedback channel for parents.
Current and new parents will be able to access the parents and guardians’ portal.
Parents will be required to register in the portal using a mobile number, Email address, ID and the student’s registration number.
Portal difficult to implement?
The portal might be difficult to implement due to the majority of students in the institution are from humble backgrounds and their parents could not have access to smartphones or the internet to access the portal.
Some Kenyans have also chipped in with their opinions saying that students could combine efforts and hack into the system and change the data in the portal.
Before it was launched, the institution has been using only the students’ portal where learners access what they want to apply for courses or do anything pertaining to their academics.
Parents and guardians were not able to access academic information of their children or indiscipline cases where some learners have been involved in serious cases and parents have complained about forged grades and school fees arrears.
