Construction of novel varsity launched at Konza

The Principal Secretary for University Education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi visited the Konza Technopolis where he assessed how far the excavation has gone for the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

KAIST is a university that will be modelled to e similar to the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. The Korean institution is the first and top Science and Technology in its country which puts an emphasis on specialized training.

According to the project contractor, the BOMI Engineering and Construction Consortium, the Institution’s first building is set to be completed by June 2022 with the first batch of students expected this September.

Amb. Nabukwesi implored contractors to work with haste and ensure the set timelines are met.

The institution is being constructed on 36 acres of land in Machakos County at the Konza Techno City.

KAIST will contain science labs with specialized local and international researchers in science and technology and engineering.

KAIST will also comprise academic curricula for 6 departments for a start. These departments include:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • ICT Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering and Agricultural Biotechnology.

These could then lay the foundation for engineering research and education in Kenya.

The Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is set to be an important part of the education fraternity with Technology, Science and Innovation seen as the catalyst for fast-tracking modernization and transformation of Kenyan as an economy and education-wise by 2030.

STEM courses in institutions of higher learning will be advanced at KAIST in a bid to create more specialists in the industrial economy and boost economic growth via the advancement of science and technology.
