The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Principal Secretary Esther Muoria recently revealed that all TVET students will be putting on school uniforms.
According to the PS, there are plans to introduce uniforms for all students who are currently enrolled or who are going to join TVET institutions countrywide.
The move is an attempt to improve the standards of education in higher learning institutions and ensure a level of uniformity among TVET graduates.
However, the PS revealed that plans are ongoing with the relevant stakeholders to determine which color and design of the uniforms the TVET learners will be wearing on specific week days.
Once this is approved, TVET students will join other students who wear uniforms while pursuing higher education.
Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) and all primary and secondary school learners all wear different sets of school uniforms.
KMTC students wear a standardized school uniform while learners of basic education institutions (primary and secondary) wear uniforms with colors chosen by the individual school’s administrators and parents.
Governor Benjamin Cheboi lauded the government’s decision to establish TVETs in every county. This is because most marketable jobs require technical skills. Besides, the sector also needs to be supported in producing highly competitive graduates.
Around 700,000 students fail to attain the minimum university entry Grade of C+ in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Recently, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu assured all candidates that they will be admitted to higher institutions of learning. These institutions also include TVETs.
CS Machogu urged the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to act swiftly and reveal the number of slots available across universities, colleges and TVET institutions to begin the placement exercise as soon as possible.
TVET students are finally being recognized and institutions will be set up across the country in every sub-county and this will bring accessibility of education near the homes of the learners. This would in turn boost enrolment and in turn raise the standards of education in the country.
