The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is coming up with a plan to punish school heads embroiled in the mismanagement of school funds.
According to a report by Daily Nation yesterday Sunday, February 21, the commission was targeting five high school principals from Bomet County alone.
The Commission revealed that it was targeting more unscrupulous school administrators who keep coming up with ways of stealing from the government.
The County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) boss Charles Nyauma gave the indication that teachers might face the Commission’s wrath for misuse of funds.
“The principals’ files have been taken to the Teachers Service Commission for appropriate action to be taken against them,” stated Nyauma.
Besides, he noted that the cases of financial misuse had been rising and the principal’s accounts were suspended.
“The bank accounts of such principals have been flagged by auditors,” he added.
TSC’s move is still on track despite some school principals claimed that auditors had been taking bribes to aid in cleaning their books.
At the start of February, the Ministry of Education proposed a law that would take away the role of managing public schools from principals and headteachers.
In the proposal, the Ministry was seeking to hire school managers for public schools.
At the moment, headteachers are in charge of schools. It is their responsibility to ensure that their institutions run smoothly.
However, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) maintained that headteachers and Principals should continue running schools under the current terms.
“To assist schools to run better, the government should begin a policy for them to hire specialized professionals such as accountants, psychologists, and sports coaches,” argued KUPPET Secretary – General Akello Misori.
