Top Student in KCSE for Visually Impaired set to join Kenyatta University

The top visually impaired student in the 2020 KCSE has now joined the Kenyatta University where he will be studying law.

The student is 18 years old and managed to get an A- (minus) of 78 points despite his condition and is now set to join the institution’s Parklands Campus.

John Ominde was the only learner who had special needs from Maranda High School and managed to come out position fourteen (14) among learners with special needs in the country.

“It was God’s work and I give all the glory. Besides, my parents supported me immensely as well as my teachers,” said an excited John Ominde.

The boy revealed that he wishes to study law at the famous Havard University in the United States. According to him, he decided to study law in order to rescue the lowly in society.

The boy’s father Mr Samwel Ominde revealed that the boy had scored 405 marks in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination from Golden Elites located in Kisumu.

“He started experiencing problems while in lower primary school following a wrong malaria diagnosis. This led to a prescription of a quinine treatment for seven days instead of three days,” said Samwel Ominde about his son.

Besides, Samwel added that he tried to consult many medical experts and consultants in order to restore his son to his full health and be able to see but did not succeed.

“In the beginning, I had applied for my son to be admitted to Nakuru High School since the school had facilities for children with special needs but I did not succeed,” added Mr Samwel.

Besides, he added that his son had to learn while undergoing a hard time at Maranda because the school did not have special needs teachers and facilities for the same. However, the boy’s father was happy that John managed to get through high school with excellent results after just six months of training in braille.
