Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs) Ready For May 2021 Intake For New Students

If you have a dream of being a primary school teacher in the future, buckle up as the government has decided to phase out P1 teacher training in the Teachers Training Colleges TTCs, replacing it with a Diploma in Teacher Education DTE.

According to the 2021 TTCs entry requirements, new minimum qualification to be a primary school teacher will be at the Diploma level. This is largely due to the introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which will require competent teachers. CBC requires quality teaching and learning.

The Diploma Teacher Education (DPTE) training has necessitated reformation of the curriculum with approval now having been completed on the core learning areas.

2021 Admission Requirements for Diploma Teacher Education DTE

The admission requirements for the Diploma Teacher Education shall be the grade C (Plain) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination or its equivalent as equated by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The DPTE training will be done for a duration of three years, going by the approved designs of the curriculum.

The designs will enable trainers and trainees on how to deliver quality learning and teaching in the best way possible while adhering to the requirements of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha said last week that the first admission to colleges for the DPTE will take place next year in May, marking the end of certificate training.

“We are now ready for the first intake in May 2021 for teacher training of teachers and this will be important for the CBC,” said Prof Magoha.

There are 85 private colleges and 31 public training colleges for teachers in the country.

P1 Teacher Training Suspended

P1 training classes were suspended last year by the Ministry of Education. The move was intended as preparation for the intake of Diploma students.

CS Magoha said that the reforms will be a crucial step for the sustainable capacity development of teachers and also to improve the quality of education in schools under the new curriculum.

What Does DPTE Training Entail?

Training under the DPTE will specifically train teachers on how to teach pupils under the Competency-Based Curriculum.

The Kenya Institute if Curriculum Development (KICD) acting Chief Executive Officer Joel Mabonga said the country needs teachers who are competent to be able to nurture learners’ potential as required in the CBC framework.

“The mission of the teacher education curriculum is to come up with a competent teacher. This teacher shall be committed to nurturing every learners’ potential,” said Dr. Mabonga in an interview that happened earlier.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said that micro-teaching and practicum in teacher education have been given prominent coverage in order to enhance experiential and reflective learning with support from teachers who are experienced in the profession as mentors.

“Teacher Training Colleges will make sure that the teacher receives appropriate learning and professional development which will give them an opportunity to do research,” said Belio Kipsang.

Previously content used to be taught separately with methodology. Now in the Diploma course, trainees will be training using an integrated concept of content and pedagogy.

For instance, in an English lesson, a trainee will be taught through the pronunciation of letters and then the concept is transferred to actual teaching where trainees will be guided on how to deliver the content in a real classroom.

At the end of the training, a teacher has to be able to develop and assess the educational competencies that are required from a learner.

As per the design, teachers’ trainees will only specialize in three subject areas. However, they will have to have attained a minimum of C (Plain) in the learning areas they wish to specialize in.

The areas of specialization will be grouped into four clusters, but teachers will only be able to pick one subject per category.

Kenya Sign Language, Foreign languages (German, French, Arabic, and Mandarin (Chinese), Indigenous Languages all fall under the first cluster.

The second cluster will entail Mathematics, Agriculture, Home Science, Science and Technology with social studies, Religious Education (CRE, HRE, IRE) falling under cluster three. Cluster Four will entail Art and Craft, and Music.

“Specialization for candidates will commence from the first year in at least three learning areas, preferably from any one of the three clusters,” reads the Curriculum Designs for Diploma in Primary Teacher Education.

Subjects that will be mandatory will not be necessarily specialties. They include subjects such as English, Physical Health Education (PHE), and Kiswahili.

The mandatory areas shall build on skills, knowledge, and attitudes of the young teacher for the effective delivery of lessons.

Those who will be approved to teach in schools must have completed the required hours of coursework and shall have passed the stipulates assessment as directed by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). This will also apply to the required hours for the practicum and passed the KNEC assessment on the same.

Micro-teaching will have to be undertaken as a course for three months and will be a pre-requisite teaching practice. During this period, teacher trainees will prepare short lessons, learning, and teaching materials, which they will perform on their peers for practice and feedback.

Colleges and Universities have been directed to begin reopenening on Monday, partially at least in the beginning with full resumption likely to happen not so along thereafter.
