President Kenyatta to Attend UNESCO Global Education Meeting with Over 60 Ministers of Education from Across 5 Continents

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to take part in the UNESCO’s high-level virtual meeting with over sixty Ministers of Education from across the five world continents, to set priorities for learning recovery and also secure financing following the global Covid-19 pandemic

The meeting is aimed at revitalizing Global Education and will take place on Thursday, 22 October from  2 p.m to 6 p.m. East African time (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. universal time).

According to UNESCO, the meeting was convened in partnership with the governments of Norway, the United Kingdom, and Ghana, so as to secure financial commitments from global leaders for the protection of education after the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to financing, the meeting will aim at arriving at a consensus on priority actions for the next year as countries recover from the aftermath of the pandemic.

The underlying goal of the meeting is to ensure that the Covid-19 pandemic does not undo decades of progress in education.

Keynote Speakers at the UNESCO’s Global Education Meeting with Over 60 Ministers

Other than President Uhuru Kenyatta, other keynote speakers who will contribute  on live or via recorded video message, include  the following heads of state:

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (Portugal), João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço (Angola),  Kaïs Saïed (Tunisia),  Iván Duque Márques (Colombia), Félix Tshisekedi (D.R. Congo),Hage Geingob (Namibia), and Paul Kagame (Rwanda).

Others include Saad Dine El Otmani, Head of the Government of Morocco, Pedro Sánchez (Spanish Government), Giuseppe Conte (Italy) , and Norway’s Prime Minister, Erna Solberg

List of Ministers of Education to Speak at UNESCO’s Meeting

The ministers of Education planned to speak at UNESCO’s virtual meeting include; Bekhzod Musayev, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Development of Uzbekistan, and Baroness Sugg, Minister for Overseas Territories and Sustainable Development of the United Kingdom. Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnerships, will represent the European Commission.

UNESCO Representation in the Global Education Meeting

The following individuals will represent the United Nations: António Guterres,  Secretary-General; Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, ;  Executive Director of the WFP (World Food Programme), David Beasley; and the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, Omar Abdi.

Other speakers include Special Envoy for Youth of the UN Secretary-General, Jayathma Wickramanayake; Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser, champion of the UN Sustainable Development Goals; Gordon Brown, Special Envoy for Education, Queen Mathilde of Belgium.
