KUCCPS Suspends TTC Intake for 2025 KCSE Candidates
In a major policy shift, the government has suspended the admission of recent secondary school graduates into Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs). This directive specifically affects the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.
The September 2026 primary teacher education intake will now exclusively target teachers upgrading from the P1 Certificate to the Diploma level. Fresh high school graduates will not be eligible for primary education courses during this cycle.
Why the Government Halted Admissions
The Ministry of Education attributes this decision to a heavily congested job market. Currently, thousands of trained teachers are languishing at home without employment.
Continuing to admit large cohorts of new trainees would only exacerbate the unemployment crisis in the teaching profession. Reports suggest this suspension could remain in place for up to three years to allow the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to absorb the existing backlog of graduates.
Alternative Career Paths for 2025 Candidates
Students who had set their sights on joining TTCs are advised to remain calm and explore alternative avenues. The government encourages these candidates to consider Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
There is a wide array of professional courses that align with different passions and strengths. For more insights on teaching careers and alternative pathways, you can visit teacher.co.ke.
Insights from the KUCCPS Webinar
This development was officially communicated by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO, Dr. Agnes Wahome. She made the announcement during the second KUCCPS webinar hosted on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
During the session, Dr. Wahome also addressed several pressing placement issues. These included the revision of courses, reasons why some students missed their university placements, and the highly competitive nature of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery slots.
Additionally, the forum provided critical updates on KMTC course applications, inter-university transfers, and the procedure for changing courses. Students and parents are urged to stay updated on the placement portal to navigate these changes effectively.
