The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced that both the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education (KCSE) certificates have been dispatched o schools for collection.
In a notice sent to students, the national examinations body urged students who sat for the 2020 national examinations to collect their certificates from their former schools.
“In case of any conformity, queries should be lodged through KNEC Query Management Information System (QMIS),” read part of the statement.
The KCPE results were released in April 2021 when a total of 1,179,192 candidates sat for their examinations.
The 2020 candidates registered good results despite the challenges that the global COVID-19 pandemic caused.
A total of 1,196,616 candidates registered for the national examinations but 12,424 failed to sit for their examinations.
In 2019 a total of 1,088,986 sat for the national examinations while 1,060,711 sat for the examination in 2018.
The 2020 KCSE results were released in May 2021 with a total of 747,171 students sitting for the examinations following almost a year of uncertainty caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, students performed better than in 2019 with 893 scoring grade A as compared to 627 in 2019.
Many secondary schools have been reported to be withholding KCSE examination certificates of learners who have not cleared their fees arrears.
However, it has been revealed that this is in contravention of KNEC rules.
Section 10(1) of the Kenya National Examinations Council Act (Cap 225A) stipulates that the functions of the Council shall be to award certificates or diplomas to candidates in such examinations…such certificates or diplomas shall not be withheld from the candidate by any person or institution.”
The law does not provide any allowance for contemplating any circumstances in which schools can decline to release certificates on account of outstanding fees.
