The Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha has revealed that Grade Six learners are required to select 12 schools for the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level.
Through a circular that was distributed to schools, students will be required to choose between national, regional, county, sub-county and private schools in the selection process.
According to CS Magoha, Grade Six learners will be required to select two schools from each category i.e. two from national, regional, county or private school categories. Students will also choose four sub-county schools.
“Parents will be expected to meet the student’s education in private school,” read part of the circular.
On Friday the 19th of August, CS Magoha implored parents and teachers to assist in selecting schools near their homes in order to ease the transition.
“Most students in private schools who usually do very well will remain in their schools.
“Probably in the coming week, I shall pronounce myself on the number of primary schools that have converted and are ready,” said Magoha.
Magoha also revealed that the application deadline was set for the 30th of August 2022.
The CS also revealed that his ministry was willing to extend the deadline in order to keep students from being locked out of the JSS selection process.
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) portal has also been extended with Grade Six students expected to begin JSS in January 2023. This will be after they sit for their Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations will run concurrently.
