The term for the Teachers’ Service Commission boss term officially ended on Tuesday 30th of June 2020, with plans for a possible reappointment or replacement not communicated yet.
His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta has not gazetted her reappointment and even the process of appointing a new TSC CEO has not commenced. It is also not yet known whether she has been made aware of what happens next.
“If Nancy Macharia’s term is to be renewed, we could have had an advertisement for the position of TSC CEO as from March this year. This is in three months as from yesterday when her term expired,” a trusted source for Teacher.co.ke said.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has, therefore, felt compelled to push for what should be a competitive recruitment process. LSK chief Nelson Havi has written to Attorney-General Paul Kihara Kariuki regarding the competitive recruitment of appointing a new TSC CEO.
“What we know so far is that there have not been any plans to renew Ms. Nancy Macharia’s five-year contract for another term. Appointments on the position should go through a competitive recruitment process,” reads the LSK’s letter, which dates June 29.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) appointed Mr. Clement Gicharu as their new assistant secretary-general who will be working with the current Secretary-General Wilson Sossion. Mr. Gicharu will be replacing Mr. Clement Omollo who was to retire at the end of the month of June after attaining the age of 60 years.
Prior to Mr. Gicharu’s appointment, he was KNUT Kiambu East Branch secretary since the year 2006. He was therefore the longest-serving official in the Central region.
He was nominated as assistant sec. general on June 8 by the KNUT Central Council via a letter by the Chairman Mt. John Macharia.
“Be aware that it has always been the desire of the National Executive Council to ensure the Central region has a presence in the national steering committee. It has always been the norm until 2018, December when the region lost its seat to the Nyanza Region,” read the letter. The letter dates on June 24.
Mr. Gicharu Gitau was born in June 1965, he then joined Lioki Primary School before proceeding to St. Joseph High Githunguri for his O-level. He did his A-level at Upper Hill School Nairobi. He then joined St. John’s Teacher’s College Kilimambogo. He also studied at the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree. Besides, he holds a diploma in Administrative Management from UniSA.
