10,833 PTE Teachers with Degrees Set To Be Deployed In JSS This Coming Week

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nancy Macharia has revealed that the Commission is set to promote 36,829 teachers next week.

Out of the 36,829, 10,833 primary school teachers will be promoted through deployment in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

On the promotions, she revealed that they will be promoted through deployment to teach at the junior secondary school (JSS) level.

While appearing before the National Assembly’s Education Committee chaired by Hon Julius Melly (Teinderet Member of Parliament), Dr Macharia told members of parliament that the Commission was currently mapping teachers who had applied through the Commission’s online platform.

“The mapping process of primary school teachers eligible to teach in junior secondary schools is a continuous process and verification of mapped files is still ongoing to identify more teachers eligible to be posted to junior secondary schools,” said Dr Macharia to the MPs.

Among Dr Macharia’s entourage to the National Assembly were TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi and other commissioners.

The TSC CEO also revealed that the Commission had identified 7,282 teachers for deployment.

“The country needs to know if there are any plans to promote teachers currently teaching in primary schools and deploy them to Junior Secondary Schools. And if yes, what is the number of tutors that will be elevated?” asked the Committee’s Chairperson.

In her response, she said,” TSC has through the verification of personal files’ identified 7,282 primary school teachers with requisite qualifications to teach in secondary schools as eligible for deployment to Junior Secondary Schools.”

According to the Commission to qualify for deployment to JSS includes:

  • A diploma in education or a bachelor’s degree in education
  • At least a C+(Plus) mean grade in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination or its equivalent
  • At least a C+ (plus) in the two teaching subjects in KCSE or its equivalent
  • Must have studied at least eight units in each of the two teaching subjects

P1 teachers will move to job grade C2 while those with Diploma will move to job grade C1. After completing three years, the teachers will move to the next job group automatically.

The TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said that the teachers will help to reduce the shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools which has become a contentious issue among stakeholders of education.

“While the teacher establishment for Grade Seven level is 61,000 (at least two teachers per class), the Commission had recruited 30,550 teachers (one teacher per class) bringing the teacher shortage at Grade Seven to 30,550,” said Dr Nancy Macharia.

The Committee will have another meeting with TSC officials today to deliberate on the Supplementary Budget estimates for the 2022/2023 financial year.
