While speaking to the media, County Director Jacob Onyiego said that several schools had requested to be elevated to higher status but only the 12 had met the criteria required for elevation.
Onyiego said that among the qualifications required were having a steady mean score of 4.5 and above, the availability of boarding facilities and if the community had also supported the request for the respective schools to be elevated.
He implored stakeholders in the elevated schools to work hard and perform in line with their new status.
“Both school heads and stakeholders should see to it that they improve the infrastructure in schools in order to improve learners’ performance,” added Onyiego.
On his part, Suna West Member of Parliament Hon Peter Masara voiced his support of Onyiego’s statement, saying that it is upon all education stakeholders to work together to upgrade standards of education within their area and form a better foundation for their children.
He said that he was proud of being a part of the positive growth of schools in his constituency and being among the voices that contributed to the elevation of the schools.
“Migori County has eight sub-counties and I am glad that among the elevated schools, four are from my sub-county. This shows there is a lot of potential in our schools and I pledge to give more support to see that quality education becomes a priority in our schools,” he said.
The Principal of St Celestino Nyangubo Girls, Mdm Hellen Ndere called on learners to report back to school and be more prepared to perform better. She urged parents to ensure their children report back to school on time.
She said that the schools’ elevation will also enable their learners to understand and appreciate different cultures because the school will from that moment be admitting learners from across the county.
