Students Sent Home Over Reports of COVID-19 in Nakuru School

Kiamaina Secondary School in Bahati, Nakuru County closed indefinitely after four students in the institutions returned positive results of COVID-19.

The government closing the school means that more than 100 KCSE candidates will stay at home for a duration of two weeks (14 weeks).

The county department of health said that the students who tested positive, together with those with whom they were in contact shall not be managed within the institution as it is a day school.

“To mitigate the effects of the disease in the school, it is recommended to quarantine the whole school for a duration of 14 days and manage the confirmed cases in isolation at their homes until they have recovered,” said health executive Dr. Kariuki Gichuki.

The first case of COVID-19 in the school was recorded on October 15, 2020. The admitted student was a case involving an 18-year-old student, at Nakuru Level Five Hospital, and the hospital, management discharged them after recovery.

According to Dr. Gichuki, close contacts underwent quarantine after identification, and later on November 18, 2020, the county hotline received an alert that students at the school were showing symptoms corresponding to those of COVID-19.

“Nakuru North Sub-County Rapid Response Team went to the school on November 19, 2020, to do further investigation. They collected samples from 30 students and 10 teachers who had shown symptoms and those who felt they had been exposed to the virus,” he said.

Four students tested positive.

“We have collected their samples and sent them for reconfirmation via a second test. Results have not been confirmed yet,” added Dr. Gichuki.

Kaimana Secondary School has a population of 120 students with 27 teachers helping the students. The health department has found out that two more students, one in form four and a form one at the school have been in contact with a parent who died on November 15, 2020, while undergoing management of COVID-19 management at Bondeni isolation center.

The health department also guaranteed medical care for sick students on home-based care. Besides, the department will offer the same for those who will need treatment at the health facilities.

A team of medics is on standby to keep an eye on the condition of the students who are both in isolation and in quarantine, on a daily basis and to ensure they follow guidelines provided to complete the required duration. They will also undergo further tests.
