Another Fire Incident at Milimani Secondary School
Two learners who attend Milimani Secondary School were nabbed over the weekend in connection with a school fire incident that occurred in the school.
The school is located near State House Nairobi.
The students were arrested following evidence from the school’s CCTV footage which showed them allegedly planning and executing the fire incident. The fire burnt down a dormitory and lasted for some time as firefighters tried to extinguish it, only succeeding after an hour.
Unfortunately, this marks the third arson case in the schools with unsuccessful attempts recorded on the 7th and 9th of January 2022. The failure of the attempts is attributed to the school administration’s quick response to stop the attempts in their tracks.
In the previous attempt on the 7th of January, the fire burnt down eight beds on the 9th of January with six learners being detained and arraigned in court over the same.
However, in the latest incident, the fire broke out and destroyed the students’ belongings with no injuries reported.
The county government was also chipped in by sending the fire personnel who were able to stop the fire from spreading even further.
Some parents arrived at the school after they got wind of the situation, potentially fearing for their children. Fortunately, the school administration informed them that everything was fine.
The incident is the latest of many incidences of student unrest in many secondary schools across the country.
The cause of the incidences varies from one incident to another meaning it is not just one reason.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education on his part has suggested that teachers and student prefects be responsible for the fire incidences.
Prof Magoha said that in some of the fires that have been reported in schools across the country, teachers have revealed that they do not what caused the school fires even though they are the ones who are in charge of the day-to-day school operations.
The CS implored teachers to ensure that dormitories are inspected and locked each day and learners movements every day be monitored.
CS Magoha advised learners to maintain discipline and warned that investigation would reveal what are the real causes of the school fires.
