FOR COMMISSION SECRETARY,

TEACHERS SERVICE COMMISSION

STATEMENT BY THE KENYA NATIONAL UNION OF TEACHERS (KNUT) CONDEMNING THE BRUTAL MURDER OF A TEACHER IN KITUI dated. January 8, 2020

Kenya National Union oí Teachers (KNUT) condemns in the strongest possible terms the Monday (January 6th, 2020) incident in which local parents evicted a teacher, Daisy Mbathe Mbaluka of Ndooni Primary School in Endau Zone of Kitui East Constituency and slashed her to death before burning her body beyond recognition.

For unknown reasons, parents invaded the school, evicted the teacher, and later ambushed her while she was taking her children to school, killing her instantly, and setting her body aflame.

The incidents of parents molesting, and in some extreme cases killing teachers are on the rise, and have caused panic, fear, and anxiety among teachers and their families. This has seriously affected Service delivery within the teaching force, resulting in poor academic performances in some schools.

We call on the Ministry of Education and that of Interior and Coordination of National
Government to act promptly and offer maximum security to teachers and school properties before the situation runs out of control.

In the same spirit, the Union calls on the Kenya Police Service and the Provincial Administration to act with speed, and bring to book the perpetrators of violence on teachers and let the Kitui incident serve as an example to the rest.

Parents who Killed Mbaluka should be investigated, arrested, charged and convicted according to the law of the land. No stone should be left unturned as we have witnessed such ugly incidences in North Eastern Region, North Rift, Western Región and South Nyanza.

Meanwhile, we call on teachers to remain steadfast in Service delivery, patriotic to the nation and uphold the ethics in the teaching profession; all should be done in line with the Code of Regulations for Teachers.

(HON. WILSON SOSSION)
SECRETARY-GENERAL
K.N.U.T.
