A 10-member education committee appointed by the Cabinet Secretary of Education Prof George Magoha, and chaired by Dr. Sarah Ruto, has resolved that schools should reopen on October 19th, 2020.
Dr. Sarah Ruto’s (KICD Chairperson) team was tasked by the Education CS to advise the Ministry of Education on matters of school reopening following an order from the president to close all education institutions due to Coronavirus.
If the task force’s resolutions are adopted by the Ministry of Education, then schools are set to reopen on Monday the 19th of October 2020, just four weeks from now.
School Reopening Schedule for Primary and Secondary Schools
Dr. Ruto’s committee suggests that primary school pupils in standard 7 and 8, and the secondary school students in form 3 and 4, will be the first to reopen.
Then, form 1 and form 2 students will follow suit to reopen two weeks later on November 2.
The other cadre of Primary school learners from pre-primary one to class six will also reopen on Monday 2nd in November 2020.
The Daily Nation newspaper reported on Sunday 20th September, that the 10-member committee recommended for a complete overhaul of the academic calendar.
Proposed 2020 School Calendar
Among the recommendations by the committee, the second term for the 2020 school calendar should start next month the October and end in late November.
The third term, on the other hand, begins in January 2021 and runs until March 2021.
With these recommendations, the 2021 academic calendar should then begin from either May or June next year.
The latest task-force’s recommendations will be a reprieve to many students who did not like the idea of repeating the class.
2020 KCPE and KCSE Exams to be Administered in April 2021
Pertaining to the national examinations, Dr. Ruto’s committee recommends that both the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) be done in April 2021.

- Augustine Muthigani (Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops),
- Jane Mwangi (Kenya Association for Independent International Schools),
- Nelson Makanda (National Council of Churches of Kenya),
- Sheikh Munawar Khan (Muslim Education Council), and
- Peter Sitienei (Chairman, Kenya Special Schools Heads Association).
CS Magoha to Meet Education Stakeholders to Review Task Force Recommendations
Prof George Magoha has convened the education stakeholders meeting tomorrow Monday the 21st of September at KICD, Nairobi.
The meeting among other agendas will cross-examine Dr. Ruto’s task force recommendations on school reopening on October the 19th.
Tomorrow’s meeting will come up with clear resolutions on the physical reopening of all education institutions after a 6 month of shut down following the Covid-19 pandemic.
The resolutions will then be presented to the national consultative conference on Friday the 25th of September.
