President Kenyatta has promised to honour outstanding teachers during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations.
This year’s Madaraka Day will be Uhuru’s final celebration before his term comes to an end in August.
“My administration recognizes the important role that teachers play in advancing our development agenda. As Madaraka Day 2022 approaches, I look forward to bestowing national honours to outstanding and transformational teachers in the education sector, as well as those who have distinguished themselves by exceptional service to Kenya.
President Kenyatta was speaking during the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) conference that was held in Mombasa at the Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa.
“In this regard, as the Madaraka Day 2022 celebrations approach, I look forward to awarding national honours to outstanding and transformative teachers in the education sector,” added President Uhuru.
The Head of State instructed the KESSHA chairperson Kahi Indimuli via CS Magoha to present names of acceptable nominees to the National Awards and Honors Committee.
Many teachers received praise for their efforts in helping reveal Kenya on the map among them Peter Tabichi of Keriko Secondary School located in Nakuru who won the prestigious Global Teacher Award back in 2019 while the Principal of Othaya Girls has also been recognized for her efforts.
President Uhuru also appreciated teachers’ efforts to persevere in ensuring that all students continue with their learning even though all schools had been closed for a prolonged period in 2020 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
According to President Uhuru, the epidemic exacerbated academic disparity and caused an increase in teenage pregnancies and the number of school dropouts.
President Uhuru revealed that Kenya is depending on teachers to assist learners to recover academically and also to assist learners who have dropped out of school to return and continue with their education.
He implored teachers to play their role in renewing the momentum of the education sector.
