Missing Female Teacher’s Body Found in Well

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that a body belonging to a  female teacher who had been missing for a while was found hidden in a well.

The family of the deceased had been worried about her whereabouts for almost two months with their hopes dashed following the discovery.

Detectives from the DCI found her decomposing body in a well that has not been used before in Igwamiti Location, in the Nyahururu area, Laikipia County. Miriam Wanjiru was a teacher at St. Louis Secondary School in the same town had been reported missing on the 19th of December, 2021 leaving her one-year-old under the care of a house help who was employed by Miriam.

The house help was decided to report the matter to the police after getting worried about the whereabouts of her employer as well as the ever-crying baby who was increasingly growing restless.

Detectives from the Nyahururu area sprang into action promptly and started carrying out investigations on the issue. They then found out that the late Wanjiru had separated from her husband, Peter Kanyi following differences that they had not been able to solve.

On the very day that Wanjiru disappeared, her ex-husband had called her acting out to be in a painful condition, begging her to go and save his life after taking poison.

Unfortunately, Miriam did not know that she was being lured to her death. She hastily rushed to save the father of her child and was not seen again after that.

The detectives joined hands with the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) in a bid to collect enough evidence against the suspect.

‘Using cyber forensic analysis of digital data’ the main suspect, Anthony Mutahi aged 29 was nabbed. After being grilled, he then revealed to detectives where he had dumped the late Miriam’s body. The body was then retrieved but unfortunately did not have its head.

Another Body in the Well

Following the retrieval, another badly decomposed body was also discovered in the well belonging to a yet to be identified girl in her teenage years. DNA samples were collected from the body for profiling.

Matatu Sold

Investigations also revealed that after the couple got separated, the late Miriam sold the Matatu that she had bought and which her ex-husband had been operating. This rendered the suspect jobless.

It was also revealed that the suspect had used the deceased’s ATM card to withdraw Kshs. 120,000 from her Equity Bank account in Nyahururu town.

The late Miriam’s late husband Peter Kanyi has also been arrested and together with his accomplice will be arraigned in court to face murder charges. This is contrary to section 203 and section 204 of the Penal Code.

The little baby belonging to the deceased is being taken care of by the local children’s officer who is working together with the DCI’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection detectives.
