Nyamira County residents have revealed their grievances over the increasing insecurity in the county following the murder of a teacher who was found later found buried in a shallow grave.
Leading the residents, Jerusha Momanyi, the Nyamira Woman Representative said that the area County Commissioner Michael Lesimamu should do their investigations as teachers and residents were now living in fear.
“It seems that there is a group of people determined to terrorize the teachers here,” lamented Ms Lesimamu.
The body of the teacher, Getrude Nyaboke who had been on attachment at Nyanderema Primary School was found buried in a secret grave after she had gone missing for two weeks.
The deceased’s maternal aunt revealed that trouble started when the deceased had a disagreement with her newly married-husband at their home in Esise. She then decided to vacate and stay on her own.
“We bought a gas cooker for her and advised her to live alone at Keroka Town to avoid her husband with whom she had had a troublesome time,” said Getrude’s aunt.
Over one of the weekends, they went to visit her but did not find her. A neighbour informed them that the Murang’a TTC teacher had been seen the previous day carrying belongings and told them that she had decided to return to her husband’s home.
After the deceased’s aunt and sisters went to her matrimonial home, they received an unsatisfactory response and they decided to report the issue to the police.
Police from Masaba North started the investigation and found the body buried in the grave.
“We arrested the husband, Brian Rioba as the first suspect to assist with investigations and information that may lead to the arrest of more suspects,” said the area Police Commander Josephat Chacha.
The autopsy was then carried out at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and it revealed that Ms Nyaboke, 23, had been strangled and hit multiple times with blunt objects on the head.
“It seems that the victim was hit several times by a group of people before she passed away,” confirmed Kisii Medical Officer Dr Enock Ondari.
The police boss revealed that they will not leave any stone unturned concerning the matter.
However, he called on members of the public to maintain peace meanwhile to allow the police to complete their investigations.
“I appeal to the public to remain calm and give us time to complete our investigations,” he said.
The incident happened barely a week after the principal of Rangenyo Girls High School was found murdered in cold blood.
When her body was found, she was unconscious in her house in the school compound and was rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where she was pronounced dead a few moments after arrival.
She was later buried at her home at Kiamokama village in Kitutu Masaba Constituency in Nyamira County on Friday the 28th of October 2022.
