Lady from Kitale Joins University 14 Years after Sitting for her KCSE Examination

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has offered a scholarship to Milly Nafula who has not been able to join university for the past fourteen (14) years.

The 32-year-old’s case came to be known recently that she had not joined university despite achieving great heights in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Milly Nafula sat for her KCSE examination in 2007 where she scored a mean grade of A- (minus).

MKU’s founder Prof Simon Gicharu while attending the 20th MKU graduation ceremony in Thika, revealed that he had been touched by Nafula’s case when her plight was brought before the eyes of the public via Citizen TV.

“Her story touched me. I asked myself how can we as Kenyans allow her to stay at home for so long just because she cannot afford to join the university? I would like to inform the congregation that we shall give her a scholarship,” said Gicharu.

The offer is going to cover her tuition fees for her Bachelor’s programme in medicine and surgery.

However, following the reveal, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) refuted Nafula’s claims that she had not succeeded to secure a vacancy in university despite getting an A- (Minus) in her KCSE examination.

Milly Nafula sat for her KCSE examination in 2007 and had not managed to join university after 14 years.

According to her, she did not receive any admission letter like the rest of her mates.

“After two years, I went to the school principal to inquire on why I had not been offered an admission letter but she advised to contact the admissions board on the same,” she said.

She then wrote a letter to the now non-existent Joint Admission Board (JAB) seeking to know why she had not been offered a place at the university.

“I wrote two letters but did not receive any response for both of them,” she said.

However, KUCCPS chairperson Agnes Wahome revealed that she had indeed been selected to Moi University back in 2008.

“KUCCPS has traced a record of JAB and has confirmed that Nafula had been admitted to Moi University to pursue Bachelor of Tourism Management course,” stated the KUCCPS Chairperson.

Besides, Wahome informed the university that she could take up Nafula’s case.
