KNEC concerned about 2000 schools missing Grade 6 Scores

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), there are more than 2,000 primary schools that are missing scores for Grade 6 learners.

It has been revealed that these schools are yet to submit their scores.

According to the examiner, the schools did not submit scores for the School Based Assessment (SBA) scores that the learners did while in Grades 4 and 5.

“It has been established that 10% of the learners that will sit for the KPSEA have not SBA scores for Grade 4 (year 2020) and grade 5 (year 2021),” read a KNEC report.

The examiner is concerned that this potentially means that the learners will miss their 60% marks out of the scores that were derived from the School-Based Assessment (SBA).

The CBC learners have a 60% of their scores coming from SBA spread over Grades 4, 5 and 6 and 40% from the summative test called Kenya Primary Schools Education Assessment (KPSEA)) which they shall sit for towards the end of this month.

The School-based evaluations are usually done using projects, practicals, portfolios and oral assessments that will allow learners to show what they have learnt in class. These three areas are executed by classroom teachers following guidelines provided by KNEC.

KNEC has already revealed the identities of the schools and learners whose scores were not uploaded. This data has been shared with the Sub-County directors under the Ministry of Education as well as TSC Sub-County directors through the TSC County Directors.

KNEC has instructed the said schools to provide the scores by the 30th of October 2022 but they had failed to comply with them.

“Current grade 6 learners whose scores for grades 4 and 5 school-based assessment scores are missing (not uploaded online); the SCDEs are requested to view the report online, print and hand it over to the affected schools. Scores are to be submitted in hard to KNEC latest the 22nd of November,” said KNEC.

The Examiner also warned schools with Grade 4 and 5 learners who do not have scores uploaded online to ensure that they are availed.

“For the lower grades (grade 4 and grade 5), Heads of Institutions, are urgently reminded to upload the previous scores in case gaps still exist. This is because going forward from the academic year 2023, no scores from a previous academic year will be uploaded in the CBA portal. All these scores attained from the assessment within a particular academic year must be uploaded within that year as per the timelines given by the Council,” communicated KNEC.

Grade 6 learners did their most recent SBA between the 18th of July and the 9th of August 2022.

The learners who sat for project assignments starting from the 18th of July and their scores were uploaded on the KNEC portal by the 16th of September 2022.
