Kenya Bracing for Full Adoption of Online Examinations

Kenyan Educational institutions are gearing towards the full adoption of online examinations after 2 months of closure following the un-ending Coronavirus pandemic.

It’s getting tougher for all students across the country; more so this year’s examination candidates. The outbreak of the coronavirus has seen the closure of learning institutions from the 15th of March 2020 to date. However, the virus has long gone past the expected expiration dates, and WHO has revealed that it may become endemic.

With the government taking measures to reduce the spread of the virus, schools have had to adapt to online classes, meant to carry out teaching and learning. Most higher learning institutions have made this possible through their already established channels, before the outbreak of the virus. Online classes have become the norm of today, as students strive to learn despite the prevailing circumstances.

Several institutions have experienced success in the online platforms and are going to administer assessments through the same platform. The University of Nairobi has revealed that it is ready to examine students as a majority of staff and students are well accommodated to their online teaching and learning services.

Features of Online Exams Procedure

On 8th May, the University of Nairobi senate committee chaired by vice-chancellor Prof. Kiama approved the guidelines and procedures for online examination. With the success of the online classes, it was apparent that the online examination procedure was a go. The institution seeks to provide quality examinations and address issues of disadvantaged groups. The approved guidelines were brought forward based on bench-marked studies of the best global practices.

Here are some of the features of online examinations:

  1. Web-based Examinations

Developments in technology have made it possible for web-based testing. The testing system incorporates the following features; time control, security control, and auto-installation. Web-based systems face a severe security challenge; however, the use of cryptography guarantees security.  The cryptography will be useful in validating student identification before testing.

A web-based system can also provide for real time-monitoring the same as the normal invigilation in schools during exam time. This form of examination is administered through Microsoft applications, which can be easily accessed by all. To issue a test, one only requires a PC or laptop.

2. Exam builder applications

Online examinations have been administered for a while now. Students have undertaken the whole learning experience without necessarily stepping into a classroom. Increased interests in these tests have brought about new opportunities for programmers and developers. Exam builders provide applications that enable the creation of online exams.

A facilitator needs to find online examination software, set up the exam, share the exam, and finally evaluate the progress of students.

The University of Nairobi has set the bar high, and other learning institutions are likely to follow suit. Their success has provided insights on online learning and has indicated that it can be as practical as the typical classroom setting. Starting the online classes earlier may have produced a better outcome for their case, but it’s not to say that other learning institutions are going to fail. It is time that other institutions get on board with the idea and deliver educational services as required.
