The Ministry of Education yesterday announced that students who sat for last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) are now able to check colleges and universities they will join.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has now opened its portal for the students to check university or college placement by themselves. The government mandates KUCCPS to carry out university and college placement countrywide based on student performance in the examination.
This announcement means it will be intriguing to see how university freshers are able to learn once admitted amid the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
The government closed all schools, colleges, and universities as a drastic measure by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19 to insurmountable numbers. 689,007 students sat for last year’s KCSE examination, an all-time high, and 125,463 candidates attained a minimum grade of C+ hence qualifying for university placement.
Another 563,544 students are eligible to join TVET institutions for Artisan Certificate, Craft Certificate, and Diploma levels.
However, the total number of qualified students did not match the 145,129 slots that were availed by colleges and universities.
Besides, 2,632 candidates who were eligible to join the university opted to join TVET institutions contrary to the normal belief that university education is the best.
Prof George Magoha also spoke of this yesterday as he implored Kenyan parents and students not to look down on TVET institutions.
The ministry also made last year’s KCSE aware that it can now access their placement information on the KUCCPS website online.
Details needed to access this information include the year you sat for the KCSE examination, your KCSE index number, and your password.
The ministry is set to activate a Short Message Service (SMS) as soon as possible.
Therefore inform all of last year’s KCSE candidates to log in on the portal and access this important information so as to prepare what they need upon admission.
Besides, it is also crucial that they start preparing psychologically for possible virtual lessons.
