The 2020 academic year’s KCSE results may not be released as planned following a number of teachers marking the KCSE examinations at Moi Girls in Nairobi downing their tools on Monday the 3rd of May, 2021.
The high school teachers went on strike and went to the streets to protests over unpaid allowances.
Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Education Prof George Magoha had pledged that the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results will be released by the 10th of May, 2021.
While speaking at Nairobi school where he oversaw the completion of the examinations, CS Magoha declared the exercise a 99.9 percent success.
The release of the KCSE results now seems to be delayed after teachers chanted their way out of the marking center and took to the streets claiming that the government failed to address their plight.
In a video doing rounds online, police officers were seen trying to calm the protesting high school teachers.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) had earlier warned the government that teachers could boycott the marking of the KCSE examinations unless their needs are addressed.
KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori implored the government to release the funds for teachers’ allowances as well as expand the examination centers to achieve the Ministry of Health social distancing protocol.
“We had expected the government to have already made provisions that examination centers be expanded due to COVID-19 protocols. The current regime is that there is a lot of congestion among teachers,” said Misori.
Misori urged Magoha to assist in speeding up the release of capitation of funds to ensure schools are able to sufficiently manage the national examinations.
Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association chairman Kahi Indimuli reiterated Akello Misori’s statement, saying that it would be hard to manage the national examinations because of financial constraints.
“The government promised to release funds a few weeks ago and we are still waiting,” said Kahi Indimuli.
