Headteacher Works as Security Guard As COVID-19 Takes Its Toll on Finances

The COVID-19 global pandemic has had its impact on peoples’ lives, forcing many to make ends meet. A headteacher at Fairway Childcare Nursery and Primary School in Mukono District, Uganda is the latest victim of the economic recession experienced worldwide.

The Headteachers, Mr. Rodgers Gimei from Uganda narrated to the media how the quite substantial economic impact the novel coronavirus has caused in his life, leading to him working as a security guard to survive.

While speaking to the Daily Monitor, Mr. Gimei said that when the government imposed the lockdown, he had not received two month’s salary. He decided to do farming on a plot he hired as he waited on the wings to see how things pan out.

A friend to the headteacher who had joined a private security company introduced him to the idea of taking up the same job to survive. On the 1st of August, 2020, he took up the job.

Since then, he has worked as a security guard in three companies as a security officer, and even though he loves the current job he feels he misses his teaching job.

“I miss a lot. I am a teacher and once the situation gets normal, I’ll go back and teach; that is why I keep researching. I also no longer have the opportunity to associate with pupils and colleagues,” he said.

However, the headteacher-turned security guard said that he is yet to adapt fully to working at night because he was not used to working during night time.

Following the revelation of Mr. Gimei’plight, he has now received job offers from 17 schools. His current employer, G4S, who have been paying him Sh. 270,000 (Ugandan money) almost down by half of the Sh. 450,000 he was earning a headteacher promised to promote him.

The G4S company has now promised to reward Mr. Rogers Gimei with a better-paying contract.

“Mr. Gimei was contacted by management to show our appreciation and was also recognized for his love for his job, and will be promoted to a better paying contract after his probation period is over,” said Ms. Allen Ayebare, G4S business development, and sales manager to the Daily Monitor.

Elsewhere, one Tom Owino decided to volunteer to be a traffic controller. He voluntarily works in controlling the traffic at Fedha Junction in Embakasi, in Nairobi City.

Indeed the novel coronavirus pandemic has impacted people’s lives in a negative way and many people are struggling to survive. The whole world can’t wait for the pandemic to subside and things to go back to normal.
