Detailed 2020/2021 HELB Loan Applications Procedure

Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced the opening of their portal for applications for second and subsequent Undergraduate Loans for the year 2020/2021 financial year.

This announcement from HELB applies to students sponsored by the government or self-sponsored admitted to both private and public universities. The scope of the allowable students applies to Kenyan students and those recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

HELB Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera while speaking to Teacher.co.ke revealed that application for HELB loans is now easier following the development of the HELB Mobile App.

“After the first time application, one has to show they still need HELB loan. HELB does not automatically assume that you need the loan. Application for a subsequent loan application is brief where an individual basically shows they need the loan.

“Application for subsequent loans will be done seamlessly for the first time on the HELB Mobile App. This eliminates the need to submit hardcopy documents at HELB Offices,’ he said.

The HELB CEO went further to explain that one has to show they are still in schooling and have not dropped out. He also said that the amount given for the first application will be the same amount offered in the subsequent year.

“If one needs a request for review of the loan on the allocated amount, they have to apply through a loan appeal form available after loans are allocated and payments are done. This will be later this year starting from October. This will be announced on all our platforms,” Ringera said.

Who are eligible for HELB Loans for the year 2020/2021?

  • Students placed in the local and private universities by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The deadline for application for these loans is next month, June 30, 2020. The HELB CEO Ringera said that after this deadline, the body would process loan applications for what is normally the September semester. “Loan disbursement will correspond with the opening dates and this will depend on when learning in all institutions will resume after COVID – 19,” he said.
