Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has revealed that the national examinations scheduled in March 2021 are now ready.
Around 1.9 million candidates are set to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, which were initially scheduled for sitting as from October 27 and November 4 this year, respectively.
However, the examinations were postponed to next year due to disruptions on the 2020 academic caused by the novel COVID-19 pandemic.
“The examinations are ready at the moment and are very simple. Let parents encourage their children to continue preparing. I must also applaud the teachers for the manner in which they have covered the timetable,” said Prof George Magoha. He was on a tour at Roysambu Primary School in Nairobi.
Magoha also reiterated that schools shall still reopen on January 4, 2021, as earlier announced. He noted that the government shall do whatever is necessary to ensure that schools are 100% prepared.
“There may be challenges when we re-open, but we shall altogether deal with them as they come. This is a very serious issue and people should stop politicizing it because COVID-19 is here with us and we have to adapt,” he said.
Magoha further said that the Government will provide facemasks for learners who come from poor families. The figure of these learners is approximated to be about 3 million.
The CS said that boarding learners whose parents might not be able to pay school fees due to the economic recession caused by the novel COVID-19 virus should be allowed to continue learning as issues concerning payment of school fees is sorted.
Regarding countrywide preparedness to re-open and adherence to COVID-19 measures, the CS said that Rift Valley is doing well with Uasin Gishu County at 80 percent. Siaya was at 80 percent while Nyandarua from Central Region is at over 70 percent.
“We have a few challenges in the North-Eastern part of the country where we are below 50 percent. However, something is being done on the same. Turkana County is doing poorly at around 12 percent but we are focused and we shall deliver before January 4, 2020,” added CS Magoha.
The CS blamed artisans for the delay in payment for the new design school desks that the state procured.
Concerning payment to the artisans, the CS revealed that the government has released the money and its artisans are receiving it directly.
He, however, cited problems in effecting payment in two tranches.
“For instance, if you are receiving Sh. 300,000 it is being paid in two tranches. If you had little money in your phone even Sh. 20, then it blocks the payment and causes delays,” revealed CS Magoha.
Ï appeal to the artisans that once money has entered their phones, they should withdraw it in order to receive the next batch of the payment,” said Magoha.
