The Competency-Based Curriculum for Junior Secondary is set to be implemented in secondary schools by January 2023.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Charles Ong’ondo, the CBC will admit more learners to secondary schools at a stage when the learners are adventurous and imaginative.
Ong’ondo said that it is not efficient to keep learners in elementary school until they reach Standard Eight when the topic should be taught in high schools.
He addressed parents’ concerns that the new curriculum will be expensive saying that innovations will be done using existing materials.
While speaking at the 45th Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) conference in Mombasa at the Sheikh Zayed Children’s Welfare Centre, Prof Ong’ondo said that the junior secondary was designed to help secondary school teachers.
On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the summit that hosted more than 10,000 high school principals.
Prof. Ong’ondo said that the government should invest more resources in secondary schools where learners will be ready to learn new things.
Ong’ondo recommended the complete adoption of the new curriculum claiming that within 20 years many occupations, teaching among them, will change in nature and others rendered obsolete.
Besides, formative learning and assessment in the CBC will eliminate the issue of having to protect national examination papers in containers to avoid leakages.
On his part, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced plans for his administration to build more than 10,000 classrooms in preparation for the transition of students from primary to junior secondary school during last year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.
President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the Treasury to allocate around Sh. 8.1 Billion for the project in preparation for the CBC.
After completing Grade Six national tests, CBC learners will join secondary schools the following year while the last 8-4-4 class will join Form One.
