8 KCPE Candidates Drown While On School Trip
Two Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates drowned while on a school trip to Theta Dam in Gatundu South, Kiambu County.
A search was then conducted immediately to recover their bodies.
The students had just completed their rehearsals when they reportedly went on a school field trip on Friday the 25th of November 2022.
According to the school principal, 60 pupils from standard eight and grade 6 had been taken to Kindle Forest to break the monotony following a long day.
Schools are known to be involved in various customs during and after rehearsals in a bid to stimulate candidates before their final examinations and relieve tension and strain.
In the rescue exercise, several police stations in the area participated in the operation to find the candidates.
“The operation began after the boys slipped into Theta Dam at around 4:30 pm on Friday, November 25,” said the Police.
Theta Dam is 17 metres in height and has a concrete spillway that goes up to Mundoro Forest to keep water from getting over it.
In another incident, a KCSE candidate drowned in Kirinyaga County a few weeks before the latest incident.
According to reports, the student died while touring Mount Kenya at Castle in Gichugu Constituency.
She was among 200 other learners who went up the mountain on foot as a recreational activity.
