Thika High School to Put Up Sh100m Modern Sports Field
On Monday, Mount Kenya University (MKU) revealed that they had signed a deal with Thika High School to build a Sh. 100 million sporting field and an indoor arena.
In the deal, Thika High School shall provide the land with the University developing the sporting facility to be used by the two institutions and the public.
Peter Waweru, who is head of students and alumni affairs at Mount Kenya University, told the Media that the field meant for sports, will be built on a 12-acre piece of land. He also revealed that the laying of the foundation has already begun. This is after the Board of Management approved the project.
Completion of the sports facility is expected to be by May 2021 and the partnership between Thika High School and Mount Kenya University will run for five years, subject to renewal.
“Thika High School had land but not the resources to develop it and since we have had previous collaborations with them in many other areas, we decided to develop the idle land into a field of sports. The project will also contain an indoor arena that shall host hockey, football among other sporting activities,” said Mr. Waweru.
He also said that the investment will help the school to earn revenue by hiring the facility out for gatherings and other meetings.

“The facility is also going to act as a platform to bring in extra revenue to the school because they can hire out the venue to other members of the public for things like weddings, meetings, or any other activity that needs a large compound,” added Mr. Waweru.
The university said that another factor that led to the decision to build the sporting facility at Thika High School is that the school hosts provincial games, especially from the Mount Kenya Region.
Mount Kenya University said that they will soon begin working on an agreement to change their current Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) they have with Thika High School which will allow the school to access Sh. 300 million auditorium the university is building at its main campus in Thika, in Kiambu County. The auditorium can carry 3,000 people at any given moment.
MKU has been in the process of increasing its partnerships as part of the growth plan in training and research.
For instance, in Thika where the main campus is located, there is an agreement in place with Thika Level 5 Hospital for the purpose of training and research to benefit MKU’s students of medicine.
Besides, the university recently signed a partnership with Thika-based Consumer goods manufacturer, Bidco Africa that gives MKU students to gain industrial attachment to learn practical skills.
