Othaya Girls High School Principal Crowned Winner of the 2020 African Union Continental Teacher of the Year Award

Jane Kimiti Principal Othaya Girls Secondary School has won the 2020 African Union Continental Teacher of the Year Award.

The African Union Continental teacher of the Year award started in 2019 in Ethiopia’s Capital City, Addis Ababa. The award was to honor teachers and the profession of teaching by celebrating teachers who are committed across the continent.

The Principal of Othaya girls was recognized for engaging in quality teaching and this brought forward academic success in her school. Besides, her efforts were able to instill desirable behavior among students through positive feedback and other programs.

Madam Kimiti was also honored for engaging in activities and networks that enhanced the cultural and social state of learning and helping students achieve long-term career goals by building engagement with the relevant agencies and information.

“One of the presentations that were notable in my win was one of the programme that we developed as a school code-named class without borders that were appreciated even in South Africa. This proved that we can give quality education together as a continent,” said Kimiti as she acknowledged the award.

In a program that Kimiti helped administer, up to seven schools in Othaya Constituency where the school is situated, were able to learn via zoom. This helped many students during the COVID-19 crisis when schools had to be closed to mitigate the spread of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Kimiti also visited a children’s home in Mararal where she assisted in rescuing vulnerable girls.
