Laikipia University Closed Indefinitely Following Days of Student Unrest

Main Campus Shut Down with Immediate Effect

Laikipia University Senate has ordered the indefinite closure of its main campus following days of sustained student unrest. The decision, communicated through an internal memo on Tuesday, requires all students to vacate the university premises immediately.

The closure follows a series of demonstrations that disrupted academic activities and sparked confrontations between learners and law enforcement officers. Security personnel have been deployed to ensure total compliance with the vacation order.

Fee Hikes and Administrative Grievances

The protests were reportedly triggered by a significant increase in tuition and accommodation fees. Students also raised concerns regarding persistent administrative hurdles, including the issue of missing marks and delayed graduation lists. These grievances have long been a point of contention between the student body and the university management.

According to student leaders, the management failed to address a petition submitted earlier in the week, leaving the learners with industrial action as the only recourse. This development highlights the growing tension in Kenyan higher education institutions over the cost of living and administrative efficiency. Security Escalation and Property Damage

What began as a peaceful picket line quickly escalated into chaos as students blocked the main highway, causing massive traffic snarl-ups. Police utilized teargas to disperse the crowds, leading to running battles that lasted several hours. While the extent of property damage is yet to be fully assessed, several campus facilities reported minor breakages.

Indefinite Suspension of Academic Calendar

The University Senate stated that the reopening date will be communicated in due course after a thorough assessment of the situation. “To ensure the safety of students, staff, and university property, the Senate has resolved to suspend all academic programs indefinitely,” the official statement read.

This closure adds Laikipia University to a growing list of public universities in Kenya currently grappling with financial constraints and student dissatisfaction. Parents and guardians have been urged to ensure their children reach home safely as the institution remains under tight security surveillance.
