Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion is among those who President William Samoei Ruto has appointed Chief of Administrative Secretaries (CAS).
Wilson Sossion has been appointed CAS to the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage where he will work alongside Hon. Rehema Dida Jaldesa.
The Ministry of Education saw the appointment of Mr Elly Stephen Loldepe, Hon. Mark Lomunokol and Hon. Anab Mohamed Gure who is set to work hand in hand to ensure the success of the ministry.
Sossion popularized his name when he rose to the position of Secretary-General to the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
The former KNUT secretary-general is beloved among many teachers even including those in other teachers’ unions including the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET).
Collins Oyuu was elected unopposed after Wilson Sossion quit contesting at the last minute. Oyuu’s insurgency convinced many teachers who chose him over Wilson Sossion who had been embroiled in a tough tussle between him and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Sossion found his way into politics in Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Party (ODM) when he got nominated into parliament.
Later, disagreements with the party led to him joining the United Democratic Alliance led by current Head of State William Ruto.
Wilson Sossion played his part in the current administration’s election during the campaigns through debates and attracting support from various media houses.
It was expected that he would be appointed either to the position of Cabinet Secretary or Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education of Labour having been involved in teachers’ welfare through a teachers’ union.
However, he was not appointed to the positions and the waiting continued. This is good news as he has finally got something out of the current administration that he played a crucial role in its campaigns.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) called for applications from suitable applicants for the positions of CAS through print media and its website.
A total of 5,183 individuals made applications by the end of the deadline which was on the 13th of October, 2022.
However only 224, applicants got shortlisted but only 50 got appointed.
President William Ruto has since submitted the names of the appointees have been sent to the National Assembly for consideration and approval by the parliament in accordance with the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act (NO. 33 of 2011).
