President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged the incoming president of Kenya after the next general elections to continue with the implementation of the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
General Elections in Kenyan are set to be held in August to decide the next president of the Republic of Kenya as well as Governors, Senators, and Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) among other elective positions.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was speaking during the Madaraka Day Celebrations that were held at Uhuru Gardens on Wednesday where the Head of State said that even after the expiry of his term this August, the government had already set up structures in place to ensure that the roll-out of the CBC would not be paused or stopped.
President Uhuru defended the implementation of the CBC saying that it is a transformative system of education that had been implemented during his ten-year reign.
According to President Uhuru, the launch of the CBC back in 2017 had undergone significant milestones in the education fraternity contrary to previous systems of education.
“The challenge of the day calls us to imagine a system that creates responsible citizens as opposed to subjects, a system that celebrates the creative potential of all our children as opposed to one that leaves them with labels of failure if they do not pass exams.
“A system that brings freedom to be creative and innovative as individuals. This is the promise of the Competency-Based Curriculum and that is why in December 2022, the pioneer CBC Class, now in its sixth grade, will transition to Junior Secondary,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta.
There have been some politicians and stakeholders of education who have been calling for the discarding of the CBC claiming that it lacks basic structures.
President Kenyatta defended his regime’s consideration of the CBC as a superior model compared to the outgoing 8-4-4 system of education, arguing that the latter focused on examinations and this should not be an aspiration of the current and future generations around the world.
“Given the manifest successes achieved in the short period of time, there is no turning back with respect to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
With time, the 8-4-4 curriculum became inconsistent with the aspirations of our growing Nation, particularly because of its overloaded curriculum and its focus on the role of learning and the passing of examinations as the ultimate goal of the system,” said President Uhuru.
