TSC to extend service of 1594 Teachers on a Contract Basis

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nancy Macharia has revealed that 1,594 principals and heads of schools set to retire in 2020 and 2021 will have contract extensions to work under contract for a further two years.

“Principals offered to remain in service for an extended period will help us stabilize our schools to ensure academic programmes go on uninterrupted,” said Dr Macharia.

According to the TSC boss, the Commission has received an allocation of Sh. 3.7 billion in July and another 6,000 intern teachers to be recruited to help in alleviating teacher shortages in schools.

Besides, the TSC CEO revealed that currently there is a 114,581 shortage in the staffing of teachers in schools. She also revealed that most of the new teachers will be allocated to sub-county secondary schools which enrol most of the students.

Regarding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) Macharia revealed that the Commission is set to train 60,000 secondary school teachers on the CBC starting from the 25th of April as the government prepares for Junior Secondary School with the CBC set to make its debut in secondary schools early next year.

“In the first phase of training 60,000 teachers from both private and public schools will undergo training including those from Special Needs Institutions and end on 13th of May 2022,” said Macharia.

She also revealed that by the end of 2022 the government shall have trained around 116,000 secondary school teachers.

“I wish to assure the country that teachers are well prepared for Grade Six CBC that is set to begin this month,” said the TSC CEO.
