TSC Set To Recruit 6,000 Intern Teachers This December

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is planning to employ more than 6,000 intern teachers in December 2021.

The newly recruited interns will be expected to report to their new stations at the beginning of January 2022 after being posted to their respective institutions.

The TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr Nancy Macharia has revealed that the additional recruitment will help to bridge teacher shortage in schools with the government committed to the policy of 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary schools.

“The government has made a good effort to ensure quality learning and teaching goes on in our public schools,” said Dr Nancy Macharia.

According to the TSC CEO, the Commission shall dispense with Sh. 1.2 billion to employ the intern teachers.

Dr Nancy Macharia appreciated the government’s efforts of allocating more funds to the Commission to conduct the recruited exercise to aid in the 100 per cent transition from Primary to Secondary school.

“We appreciate the government for allocating TSC funds every year for the recruitment of additional teachers since the 100 per cent transition programme was established,” said Dr Nancy Macharia.

Out of the 6,000 intern recruits, 4,000 will be allocated to secondary schools while just 2,000 will be allocated to primary schools.

The exercise will begin towards the end of November and the start of the month of December when the current internship contract is set to expire.

In 2020, the Commission employed 12,000 intern teachers using the COVID-19 economic stimulus package of Sh. 2.4 billion.

Currently, secondary schools intern teachers earn Sh. 20,000 per month while their primary school counterparts earn Sh. 15,000 per month.

Recently, in July TSC advertise for vacancies of 3,914 replacements for primary and secondary schools as replacements for teachers who exited the service.

In the July advertisement, the Commission allocated 2,987 and 927 posts to primary and secondary schools respectively.

Besides, a further 5,000 teaching posts for secondary schools were also advertised. 1,000 were allocated to practising P1 teachers who held a bachelor’s degree and having attained a C+ in the two teaching subjects to be deployed to teach in various secondary schools across the country.

The teachers who were recruited have been receiving their posting letters. They were employed on permanent and pensionable terms.

TSC rewarded intern teachers 30 marks for their service to the Commission, giving them a huge advantage in the recent recruitment exercise.

This, as expected, caused a massive uproar especially from those who were not in the internship program and had graduated in earlier years.

According to the TSC CEO, the recruitment in July raised the number of teachers hired to ease the burden that 100 per cent transition brought in schools to 28,700.

At the moment, 330,671 teachers are working for the Commission.

The applicants for the advertised internship posts will be required to present the originals and clear copies of the following documents.

The documents will prove their academic credentials and their registration with the Commission.

  • National Identification Card;
  • KCPE Certificate or its equivalent (include certificates for attempts if one repeated exams)
  • National Council of Persons with Disability (NCPWD) Card (where applicable);
  • KCSE certificate or its equivalent (include certificates for attempts if one repeated exams);
  • Diploma/Degree certificate and official transcripts;
  • Certificate of Registration as a teacher;
  • Sworn Affidavit in instances where names appearing on the submitted documents differ;
  • Primary and Secondary School leaving certificates and other relevant testimonials.

TSC gives equal opportunity to all applicants regardless of gender, disability, ethnicity or Home County.

For instances where there will be a tie in the scores of the applicants, consideration will be given on the following criteria.

  2. The applicant(s) who graduated earlier in time;
  3. The Applicant’s performance/grade in teaching practice;
