Study Shows Teachers Could Be Awarding Better Grades to Learners with desirable traits

A study has revealed that the personality of students does impact the way teachers mark and award results of the examination to them.

Universities from England, Russia in Italy which carried out the study or rather the research, investigated the performance of students in arts, sports, science, and literature in Russia.

On Thursday, the 20th of May, 2021, BBC News revealed that the study comprised of a comparison of grades teachers awarded to their students which they anonymously acquired, in state examinations.

According to the research, the way a teacher award results to students could be mostly influenced by the personality of the students rather than the objective performance that a standardized examination is supposed to measure.

The study revealed that tutors might unconsciously show bias towards a particular student assuming that those who have more desirable traits are the one who is more focused more on their classwork.

“It was interesting although perhaps not surprising that some teachers seem to award higher grades to students with more ‘desirable’ personality traits such as high agreeableness,” said Kostas Papageorgiou who was one of the researchers.

The team identified blind marking and moderation of examinations if executed well, as the potential to reduce the negative impact of bias.

In the year 2019, a group of researchers confirmed that their firstborn brothers and sisters led on matters pertaining to intellectual capabilities.

The researchers noted that firstborn children tended to have higher IQs (Intelligence Quotient) than their siblings. This consequently meant that the debate that has existed for a long time over who is likely to be the smartest in the family was solved.
