Shortage of teachers caused by both insecurity and hardship in the North Eastern region has led to many schools being severely understaffed.
The situation can be abated if locals embrace the teaching profession in order for them to address the shortage.
Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif has urged students from the Northern Kenya region to join the teaching profession to curb the shortage of teachers in the region.
While attending the second graduation ceremony at Uzima University in Kisumu, Governor Khalif said that the number of students joining the teaching profession is low because entry grades for the profession have been very high for a long time.
According to Khalif, his government is committed to sponsoring students in public universities across the country to pursue teaching and medical courses.
He said that his administration is currently sponsoring 15 students at Uzima University through partial scholarships.
Khalif urged counties in Nother Kenya to invest more in the training of primary school teachers.
Khalif also lauded faith-based institutions for doing a great job in supplementing the efforts of the government in the provision of education.
