Thousands of educators across Kenya will access their March salaries sooner than usual. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) adjusted its schedule to ensure staff can observe Idd-ul-Fitr without financial constraints.
Early Payout for Idd-ul-Fitr
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared Friday, March 20, as a public holiday. This date marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadhan. To meet this deadline, the commission finalized its payroll operations on March 17.
Bank and Sacco accounts are expected to reflect the updated balances by Thursday, March 19. This early release helps families plan for festivities well in advance of the long weekend.
Significant Relief for JSS Interns
The timing is especially helpful for approximately 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns. Many of these teachers did not receive pay in February following their recruitment in January. They will now receive their monthly stipends along with any accrued arrears.
Interns currently receive a gross stipend of Ksh 20,000. After statutory deductions like the Affordable Housing Levy and Social Health Authority (SHA) contributions, the net pay is roughly Ksh 18,000. Comprehensive guides on these deductions are found on teacher.co.ke.
Status of Replacement Teachers
The payroll also includes 9,159 replacement teachers hired earlier this year to fill vacancies left by retiring staff. These educators are on permanent and pensionable terms from their first day of service. The group consists of 7,065 primary school teachers and over 2,000 secondary school tutors.
Breakdown of CBA 2025-2029 Salaries
Permanent staff are now drawing salaries based on the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). A teacher at Grade B5 now earns a basic salary ranging from Ksh 25,028 to Ksh 31,615. Additional benefits include a Ksh 4,000 commuter allowance and an annual leave stipend.
Housing allowances vary depending on the workstation. Teachers in Nairobi receive Ksh 6,750, while those in major municipalities like Kisumu and Eldoret get Ksh 4,500. Detailed salary scales and career progression news can be monitored via education.co.ke.
Academic Upgrading
With the implementation of new salary structures, many teachers are looking to enhance their qualifications. Accredited courses and degree pathways are available through teacher.ac to help staff move into higher job grades.
The early salary disbursement serves as a morale booster during a period of legal uncertainty regarding internship contracts. As schools close for the holiday, the financial injection will provide much-needed stability for households nationwide.
