The famous award-winning teacher Brother Peter Tabichi has been included in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) review task force gazetted following its appointment by His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto.
President Ruto selected 49 men and women to spearhead the reforms in education.
Among those appointed were Peter Tabichi, Halima Saado, David Some, Jacinta Ngure, Peter Njenga, Jerono Rotich, Ciriaka Gitonga, Purity Mbaabu and Edward Katue, Jane Ombunya, Bernard Karuiki and Peter Njenga.
The other appointees were Virginia Wahome, Robert Juma, Charles Kyalo, Anthony Cheruiyot, Seline Chepngeno, Bishop Geoffrey, Laila Abubakar, Daniel Otieno, Geoffrey Waweru, John Kamiti, Kizito Wangalwa, Augusta Mwihaki, Peter Barasa, Ahmed Yusuf, Jone Mose, Hassan Mwakimako, Lynette Mwende, Wilson Kogo Stephen Mumbua, Paul Lilan, Richard Githinji and Collins Odote.
Following the revelation, it was a surprise that former KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion missed out in the 49-member team which sought to address issues pertaining to the CBC.
Sossion has been at the forefront of opposing the curriculum since his tenure at KNUT. He has on many occasions termed CBC a fraudulent curriculum.
Many teachers were betting on his appointment as the Education CS but this did not happen as Ezekiel Machogu was appointed.
“CBC, the way it was introduced in this country, was to destroy the existence of public schools because they will never implement it. We did not prepare and it was just imposed.
“Public schools will die and it will open a window for privatization. Whoever imposed it on this country was very deliberate to kill public schools,” said Sossion.
According to the gazette notice, the task force which Raphael Munavu will chair will among other things evaluate the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Munavu was President Ruto’s principal at Chiromo campus.
According to a gazette notice dated September 29, the team will have 7 secretaries and 42 members.
“It will assess and recommend an appropriate structure to implement the CBC system as well as study all laws governing the basic education subsector,” the gazette notice stated.
According to the gazette notice, the task force will study, assess and make recommendations on the conceptualization and implementation of critical tenets guiding the competency-based approach.
“This includes including but is not limited to value-based education, community service, learning, parental empowerment and engagement, the assessment and examination framework and the quality assurance and standards framework.”
Besides, the task force will recommend streamlining continuity in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
The task force will also review and recommend legislation to facilitate the amalgamation of HELB, TVET and University and University Funding Boards with a view to harmonizing and merging all tertiary education funding entities.
The team includes Vice-Chancellors, Gitahi Kiama, Paul Wainaina and former heads of private schools heads Mutheu Kasanga among others.
“The secretaries are the KNEC CEO David Njengere, Elyas Abdi, Eunice Gachoka, Jackson Too, Richard Miano, Reuben Nthamburi and Patita Tingoi,” read part of the notice.
